How is Lufthansa European Economy Class during Covid?
Back in September, during my first international trip since October 2019, we took Lufthansa on a trip from London Heathrow to Paphos, Cyprus connecting via Munich. This journey ran quite smoothly, although in short Lufthansa European Economy Class has little to get excited about.
Our flights consisted of the following aircraft:
A320neo from London to Munich
A319 from Munich to Paphos
A320 Paphos to Munich
A320neo from Munich to London
Boarding processes, due to document checks, were extremely slow at Heathrow and Munich - resulting in Lufthansa repeatedly checking documents multiple times for one journey.
All the flights during our journey were packed considering this was in mid-September and not peak Summer season.
Mask wearing on all flights was excellent. Lufthansa also requires passengers to wear surgical or N95 masks to improve safety - these are provided if you only have cloth masks to hand.
Free alcoholic-wipes are provided to passengers to clean their seat area. I suspect that this will be axed to cut costs as soon as Lufthansa can get away with it.
Unless you’re sat at the front or exit rows of the plane, leg space is tight on all their aircraft. This also makes it quite difficult to work from a laptop whilst on-board.
Seat padding on these aircraft are more akin to ironing boards, as so many European airlines have trended towards.
All the aircraft we flew had both USB outlets to charge your device from. On the A320neo family aircraft, they even featured USB-C outlets for faster charging - although I didn’t test to see if it would charge my MacBook. They are located below the seat in front of you.
Toilets on all the aircraft are very cramped and have very little space in them.
There’s no in-flight entertainment on Lufthansa - akin to almost every European airline - but in-flight Wi-Fi is offered and powered by Deutsche Telekom. Pricing is fairly reasonable - but depends on what your needs are. It does also allow you to keep track of flight progress for free, which is a nice touch.
Food is now only on a paid-basis on Lufthansa - after moving to this model in early-2021. Only a free bottle of water is provided…
…as well as free pre-landing chocolate which is a nice addition.

Ahhh Lufthansa. My first experience with you - all I can say is ‘meh’. The price was reasonable and you got us there on time, but it was no more than that. It’s a shame that European airlines, particularly those of the national carriers, have followed the route of low-cost airlines to achieve success rather than follow their Asian counterparts in providing greater quality over low-cost competitors. Would I fly them again within Europe? I wouldn’t rush for it unless the price was much cheaper - and you should definitely think the same way.
