Exploring Avani Plus Khao Lak: A Gem for Family Travellers

Within the prestigious portfolio of Anantara Hotels, Avani Plus stands out, offering chic and contemporary lodging options for today's travellers. But what truly sets Avani Plus Khao Lak apart? Is it the ideal choice for your next getaway?

Disclosure:

Avani generously offered a four-night stay across their establishments in Siem Reap, Cambodia (FCC Angkor) and Khao Lak, Thailand (Avani+) in exchange for our honest review. Neither the hotel operator nor their UK representatives had any influence over the content of this review. Only factual inaccuracies, if any, will be corrected.

Arriving at Khao Lak

Arriving at Khao Lak typically involves flying into Phuket International Airport, serviced by major airlines from the Middle East, Asia, Finnair, and Turkish Airlines. Although Khao Lak is a 90km journey from the airport, taking about 90 minutes, its secluded location may be a draw for those seeking a retreat from Phuket's bustling crowds, despite the additional travel cost.

It's worth noting that while Grab, Southeast Asia's popular ride-hailing app, operates at Phuket Airport, it's unavailable in Khao Lak. Therefore, arranging transport with your hotel in advance is advisable.

First Impressions

Avani+ Khao Lak, despite sharing its brand with FCC Angkor in Siem Reap, offers a distinctively different experience. Unlike its boutique counterpart, Avani+ is tailored for longer stays, boasting a comprehensive array of facilities within its expansive grounds.

The lobby, initially unassuming from the exterior, reveals a spacious, tranquil area upon entry, complete with a coffee shop and serene design elements, ensuring a warm welcome.

Check-in was efficiently handled within ten minutes, even during busy periods, with all necessary formalities promptly attended to, including a refreshing cold towel.

The property's sheer size is immediately noticeable, offering a plethora of activities and spaces, though it may take a bit of orientation to navigate.

The Room

Our accommodation was a Deluxe Room, reflective of the typical guest experience. At 35sqm, the room offers ample space, thoughtfully divided into a bath/dressing area and a sleeping area, making it ideal for couples on extended stays.

The bathroom boasts high-quality finishes with excellent shower pressure and temperature, complemented by luxurious Malin+Goetz amenities. However, the 'rum' scent wasn't to my personal liking.

Practical features like an open-plan wardrobe, complete with an ironing board and iron (though more hangers would be appreciated), add to the room's convenience.

The bedroom area features a comfortable King Sized bed, modern decor, and convenient charging options, alongside fast Wi-Fi and a wide selection of TV channels. The balcony offers serene views, enhancing the room's appeal despite a few design quirks that could be improved.

Dining and Facilities

Breakfast at the Elements restaurant offers a vast buffet selection catering to diverse tastes, with minimal waiting times for freshly prepared dishes.

The resort also houses two additional dining options, The Beach House and Mi Scusi, for those seeking variety.

Avani+ Khao Lak shines as a family-friendly destination, with dedicated pools and indoor activities for children. Fitness enthusiasts will appreciate the well-equipped Avani Fit gym.

The beachfront, with ample loungers and diligent staff, provides a pristine setting for relaxation, though weather conditions can be unpredictable.

Loyalty Programme

Avani Hotels participate in the Global Hotels Alliance's Discovery programme, offering a unique rebate system in Discovery Dollars, which can be redeemed across a variety of services within the network.

Final Thoughts

Avani+ Khao Lak presents an attractive proposition for families seeking a comprehensive holiday experience, with spacious accommodations and excellent amenities. Its location also serves as a gateway to less-explored attractions in the region.

However, for younger couples or those preferring a more intimate setting, the resort's bustling atmosphere and reliance on external transportation for local exploration may be less appealing.

Ultimately, Avani+ Khao Lak offers a rich array of features and amenities, making it a viable option for many, though it may not align with everyone's holiday preferences.
