Reaching FCC Angkor:

Siem Reap's compact size ensures most destinations are easily accessible. Angkor Wat lies roughly 20 minutes away by scooter, while the lively Pub Street is a peaceful 10-minute walk away.

The new Siem Reap Angkor International Airport (SAI), while impressive, is nearly an hour's drive compared to the previous airport's 15 minutes. For UK travellers, connecting through Bangkok or Singapore is most common. We flew Thai Air Asia from Bangkok-Don Mueang (DMK) with a connecting flight on Singapore Airlines via Phuket. If flying from Bangkok, consider Thai Airways or Bangkok Airways departing Suvarnabhumi Airport, known for its superior facilities and lounge options.

First Impressions and Historical Charm:

Upon arrival, FCC Angkor exudes a sense of understated elegance. The property seamlessly blends into its surroundings with its architecture and lush greenery, creating a tranquil haven.

While not directly housing a Foreign Correspondents Club like its Phnom Penh counterpart, FCC Angkor stands on the former residence of the French Indochina period's Colonial Governor. Subtle nods to journalists and local storiestellers are woven throughout the property alongside Khmer décor, making it an intriguing space to explore.

Check-in was swift, complete with refreshing welcome ice lollies and cold towels after a passing downpour. We were informed about potential noise from the ongoing Water Festival, celebrating the end of the rainy season. However, we embraced the opportunity to experience Siem Reap at a time bustling with local festivities, creating a more vibrant atmosphere.

The property comprises two sections: the original Governor's house and a newer wing across the road. Both offer various room types, with the newer wing featuring a larger pool and spa, while the original boasts a gym, restaurant, and bar. Guests can access facilities in both sections.

Room Experience:

Our Deluxe Room resided in the original wing on the ground floor. Reaching the room involved a captivating stroll through a "jungle-like" environment, complete with atmospheric lighting and water features.

The room offered floor-to-ceiling windows with blackout curtains and sheer nets for privacy. A small seating area outside the room provided a space to relax, although it could experience some foot traffic.

Stepping inside, the room was divided into a sleeping area and bathroom. The sleeping area featured a comfortably firm bed and warm tones emanating from the lighting, wood, and floor tiles. Despite the ongoing festival, I slept soundly throughout the stay.

Opposite the bed, an eclectic desk displayed elements of both Khmer and French colonial history. The typewriter with a welcome note was a charming touch; however, the chair, while aesthetically pleasing, proved uncomfortable. The lack of an in-room sofa was the only notable drawback, addressed in the next room category.

As is customary in the region, complimentary bottled water was provided alongside locally sourced Robusta coffee and floral teas. The hotel could consider offering additional paper filters for multiple uses of the single-use coffee and tea "test tubes."

The bathroom featured a sliding slatted wood door revealing a Khmer proverb. The right side housed the open wardrobe with an in-built safe and a separate toilet area. Although open wardrobes are not always ideal, the sliding door provided some privacy from the main bedroom.

A brass sink complemented the room's colour scheme. FCC Angkor partners with local producers to create high-quality, beautifully scented shower gel, moisturiser, shampoo, and conditioner, showcasing Cambodian products. Finally, the spacious shower offered excellent pressure and temperature, perfect after a day in the humid climate. While a minor detail, placing the shampoo dispensers closer to the shower would enhance convenience.

Despite not being the highest room tier, the Deluxe Room's cosy and historical design created a welcoming space.

Amenities, Food, and Beverages:

The original wing houses a compact fitness studio, sufficient for a quick daily workout and rarely crowded during our stay. The main pool, surrounded by sun loungers and a poolside bar, resides near the gym. The hotel staff informed us that the newer wing's pool is larger and less frequented, ideal for laps.

Breakfast was served buffet-style at The Mansion restaurant, the original Governor's residence. FCC has meticulously preserved the French interior design, reminiscent of Raffles Hotel's Long Bar in Singapore with the notable exception of the absence of peanut shells littering the floor. The breakfast spread offered a delectable combination of Khmer and international options, with daily rotations ensuring variety. The freshly prepared noodle dishes were particularly noteworthy.

Completing the dining and beverage options, the on-site bar, Scribe, draws inspiration from the renowned writers who frequented Foreign Correspondents Clubs. Scribe offers a curated selection of cocktails featuring high-quality regional and international spirits. We enjoyed several cocktails before venturing out to experience the vibrant festival atmosphere.

As part of our stay, FCC Angkor provided a one-hour massage at Visaya Spa, located in the new wing and open to non-residents. The spa adheres to the hotel's design ethos, creating a luxurious experience surpassing many other Siem Reap spas. The staff, like all hotel personnel, exemplified dedication and pride in their work, meticulously explaining massage options and delivering an exceptional treatment.

Conclusion:

FCC Angkor by Avani, with its rich history, prime location, and captivating design, is a true gem in Siem Reap. While minor room design improvements could be made, they wouldn't detract significantly from the overall experience. The hotel provided a reliable and tranquil haven amidst the bustling city, staying true to its Khmer-French heritage. Whether seeking cultural immersion, historical exploration, or simply relaxation, FCC Angkor by Avani caters to discerning travellers seeking a unique and memorable Cambodian experience.
